Industry 4.0: Introduction

We’ve talked a lot over the previous blogs about how recent technological advancements have changed our civilisation for the better, and how they could potentially change us in the future. So, how do we explain what “Industry 4.0” means, and how it is able to give us a global overview of the development of humankind? Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth stage of the current Industrial Revolution in the world, as we can see below in the image.

As we can see, Industry 1.0 included the start of the mechanisation of new technology, Industry 2.0 marked the beginning of mass production, assembly lines and electrical energy, Industry 3.0 saw the introduction of automation, computers and electronics, and Industry 4.0 (the current age) sees humans produce interconnectivity between devices, including the internet and data networks.

Now, there is a focus in the modern age of digital technology to reduce the amount of human involvement, with machines gaining increasingly more access to data and online information. Machines getting smarter allows humans to be less involved with automated processes, essentially making factories more efficient, more resourceful and less wasteful. During this digital age of connection over data networks, machines are able to share information with each other easily and immediately,
